Judging and Format
Pure Balboa Couples Competition
The Pure Balboa Couples Competition will run in one round mid-way through the Friday evening dance. The 10 couples will dance three all skates, approximately one and a half minutes in length, at 110, 210, and 310 BPMs. Remember, this is Pure Balboa. No breakaways, no swing. Judges will emphasize finese, musicality and partnering.
Bal-Swing Jack and Jill
Prelims – The preliminary round for the jack and jill will be held just prior to the start of the dance on Saturday. The prelims will involve dancing in heats to three one and a half minute songs of approximately 230 BPMs. Couples will rotate partners during the prelims and be judged as an individual. The prelims are Bal-Swing, but prelim judging will focus on partnership and finese.
Finals – The finals round for the jack and jill will take place mid-way through the evening on Saturday night. Approximately five couples (or the closest natural break) will be brought back for two all skate dances and one spotlight dance. Tempos will be approximately 160 and 260 for the all skates and 230 for the spotlight. The finals are Bal-Swing, as well. Additional songs of varying tempos may be added at the request of the judges.
